“I’m happy enough. I don’t expect much. I don’t get much, I don’t give much. I generally enjoy whatever comes along. That’s my answer for you, summed up for your feminine consideration. I’m happy enough. “
Dir: Jerusha Hess
Starring Keri Russell, JJ Feild, Bret McKenzie, Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Seymour, and Georgia King
The romantic comedy may be on life support, but Jerusha Hess’s Austenland proves there may be some life left in this battered genre. Austenland stars Keri Russell as Jane Hayes, a hard-core Jane Austen fan who escapes her life filled with disappointing love prospects for Austenland, an immersive, Regency era, vacation spot dedicated to making every woman feel like an Austen heroine. Austenland deftly celebrates and critiques fanship as Jane experiences the negative aspects of Austen’s world: ritual class humiliation and duplicitous suitors; while validating her love of Austen by allowing her to be the plucky, sensational woman she admires from the novels. Jane does find love, as all Austen heroines do, in Henry Nobley, played by the perfect JJ Feild, yet her journey is one of deciphering the truth inside the fiction of Austenland. The film is packed full of laughs, supplied mostly by Jennifer Coolidge, charm from Russell and Feild, and great costumes. Fans of Austen’s books and films will see many of their favorite moments lovingly sent up for humor. And there’s a great moment involving Nelly’s “Hot in Here.” Check it out!
